To deliver an Art education that allows pupils to understand and engage with visual language of Art and Design - in its school context and its place in the wider world beyond Hurstmere School.
-
To enable our pupils to go on their own creative journey and encouraging them to have their own thoughts and opinions so they can communicate personal meaning and response in their work.

KS4 Courses Offered
- Examination Board: AQA
- Syllabus Number: AQA GCSE Art and Design (Fine Art) 8202/C
Course content:
GCSE Fine Art is all about your skill, creativity and imagination. You will create work in response to project themes and different kinds of inspirational starting points. Although you will all begin from the same starting point you will develop your own unique thoughts and ideas to explore. All pupils will have 5 hours of lessons over a 2-week period throughout Years 10 and 11 to complete the courses.
The GCSE Art and Design course is made up of two components:
- Component 1: Coursework 60% of the final GCSE grade
During the course the pupils will build up a portfolio of work this is known as the sketchbook this work is carefully selected and presented. This will include two in-depth projects over the course of year 10 and the beginning of year 11: Natural Forms and Collections.
- Component 2: Externally set task 40% of the final GCSE grade
In January of year 11 pupils receive the exam paper from AQA and one theme from the exam paper is then chosen. Over a limited number of weeks pupils will carefully research their thoughts and ideas in response to their chosen theme. This will take the form of a sketchbook filled with primary research, artist connections and exploration studies. The pupils will then take their sketchbooks into a ten-hour practical exam. During the exam time they will create a drawing, painting or other type of final piece outcome to finish their project.
