School Games

The School Games is a government initiative which aims to make a positive and meaningful difference to the lives of children and young people through sport and physical activity. Hurstmere School host the Bexley School Games Organiser, Miss Allsop who works with all Primary and Secondary Schools within Bexley. Our mission is to put physical activity and school sport at the heart of schools. Providing young people with the opportunity to enjoy and learn through competition to achieve their personal best.

We strive to tackle inequalities by increasing participation for those young people who need it most, to provide positive experiences which create a lifelong love of being active and ensure young people have a voice and help to design the local offer.

Competition

The School Games provides schools with the opportunity to compete in:

• Virtual Competition – activities that can be run within their own school but allows children to still compete with other schools across the borough.
   
• Intra School Competition - opportunities within their own school for young people to compete against themselves, their own class or year group.
   
• Inter School Competition - opportunities for young people to represent their school either against one or more other schools at an inspire festival, development sport or competition.
   
• London School Games - at some festivals and competitions schools may qualify to go on to represent the borough in the London School Games Event.

The world is a competitive place with challenges and pressures on all our lives to stand out from the crowd or to be successful. What better place to learn the lessons of what it takes to be your best, to be creative and to accept winning and deal with losing than school sport? To help with this, there are a set of values developed by young people called the Spirit of the Games.

The values are self-belief, honesty, teamwork, respect, determination and passion.

Participation

In order to provide more competitive sporting opportunities, a key focus is to give more young people responsibility within sport. Whether it is as a player, reporter or official, the School Games provide an excellent opportunity for all young people to make a positive and active contribution to their school.

Sports Leadership plays a vital role within the School Games and Hurstmere Sports Leaders are trained to support the running of several of the Primary and Secondary School Games competitions and festivals, this not only provides a workforce for borough competitions but provides our boys with important life and employment skills.

Hurstmere Sports Leaders

We offer our students an extensive Sports Leadership and volunteering programme at Hurstmere. Boys can be involved in the programme from year 7 through to year 11 via an application process.

As Sports Leaders the boys work on their character development and gain a variety of life and employment skills such as organisation, planning, communication and teamwork. They deliver warm-ups, skills and drills for a variety of sports and mini games. As they progress through the school, they can gain more experience and become stronger, more confident leaders by helping to organise and officiate at School Games events. Leaders are also supported to volunteer at school and sports clubs should they so wish.
