We take great pride in our pastoral care at Hurstmere. We understand that every student is an individual, and we work together to ensure that they can reach their full potential. We, as a pastoral team, aim to ensure that all students can learn to ‘Believe and Achieve’, breaking barriers to learning and progression and developing students to become responsible global citizenships, ready to make a valued contribution to the community.
Our success is attributed to the positive communication we have with parents, staff and outside agencies to ensure that students receive the best care and support. As Ofsted 2022 commented,"pupils appreciate the positive working relationships that they have with adults in this school. This helps them to feel secure".
Who supports our students?
Supporting students with mental and physical wellbeing is at the core of our pastoral care system. There is a stepped approach to support at Hurstmere, starting with form tutors. However, we have a team of staff that are available to support students whenever they need support.
Students are also encouraged to request support from a member of our safeguarding team if they have a concern about themselves or another student. Students can email hereforyou@hurstmere.org.uk

Safeguarding concerns are brought to the immediate attention of the Designated Safeguarding Lead – Mrs Harvey for assessment.
Tier 1 Support - Form Tutors | Students are encouraged to talk to their tutor if they have any queries or concerns. Parents should also contact form tutors first if they have concerns or queries that need addressing. |
Tier 2 Support - Raising Standards Leaders | Queries or concern will be brought to the attention of the Raising Standards Leaders if it cannot be resolved by the students form tutor. They will try to intervene and help support students and/or parents where appropriate. |
Tier 3 Support - Student Welfare and Attendance Panel (SWAP) referral |
If a concern remains the Raising Standards Leader will refer the case to SWAP which meets weekly to discuss referral cases, discuss potential interventions and review existing cases. This is attended by Raising Standards Leaders, the Inclusion Team, Safeguarding Team and AEN including the SENCO. Interventions can include both internal and external interventions such as through Bexley Inclusion, Horizon Outreach and Refocus programmes, depending on the need. |
Structure of Pastoral Care at Hurstmere School
At Hurstmere School we operate a year system, which enables us to closely monitor students’ academic development alongside their behaviour, attendance and personal development. Each year group is overseen by a Raising Standards Leader who is tasked with ensuring that students within their care, maximise their potential.
Each year group is made up of form groups, and each form group belongs to one of the following houses: Caxton, Chaucer, Cobham and Sidney. Each form group nominates a School Captain, and each house nominates a House captain. This gives the students the opportunity to represent themselves through student voice activities, and the opportunity to belong to a positive community for academic and sporting events.

Pupils spend time with their form tutors for 20 minutes. They follow a carefully constructed personal development curriculum that reinforces their academic learning in lessons.

Character Education Programme
Each week the pupils are given the opportunity to explore in depth one of our seven RTRAILS of Respect, Teamwork, Resilience, Ambition, Integrity, Leadership and Self-Belief.
They break each one down, exploring what it means, how it is displayed, critically evaluating their own contribution to demonstrating that trait. They then move on to how that trait is important within the workplace. Crucially, we want our pupils to understand why our RTRAILS are important values to have within the workplace.
DEAL – Drop Everything and Listen
Pupils get a weekly opportunity to listen to either the teacher or another pupil read aloud to the group. The aim is to encourage dialogue and curiosity about the passage/extract and leading to a deeper understanding.
Assembly
All pupils receive one assembly each week, facilitated by the year groups Raising Standards Leader or a member of SLT.
PSHE Personal Social Health and Economic Education, including RSE and Citizenship
Hurstmere students are (and will continue to be) active citizens in their communities who understand the value of healthy relationships
PSHE incorporates the statutory content of RSE and Citizenship. The priorities of this curriculum are that pupils move to young adulthood and beyond with respect for themselves and others, in order to live confident, healthy and independent lives, navigating how to manage a variety of relationships safely. They have opportunities to critically think and debate UK and wider global issues and discuss moral and social questions, including those of equality and diversity, through varied styles of delivery.
They are presented with issues around the law, parliament and democracy, volunteering and charities, as well as money matters to equip them for later life. They are encouraged to seek support in school with their health and are signposted to where support can be found from external agencies. PSHE in the Personal Development remit of the school also seeks to emphasise the RTRAILS (core values) of the school.
PSHE is delivered via tutors on a consistent timetabled slot of Personal Development in registrations. Tutors are provided with age appropriate resources for their tutor group ahead of this slot, so that they can prepare and adapt as necessary for their groups. These resources may take the form of a PowerPoint on sharepoint, Hodder textbooks, a Teams or Zoom remote learning lesson with an external provider or a workshop or theatre production on a strand from the RSE or Citizenship objectives.

The year group is divided up into tutor groups, each one led by a form tutor. Every pupil is also a member of one of the four Hurstmere Houses - Caxton, Chaucer, Cobham, and Sidney. Each form is linked to a house and competes throughout the year in various events to gain house points for the overall house competition.
Form Tutors
Pupils will spend 20 minutes daily in registration with their form tutors, at the start of the day. This is a great time to reinforce our high standards, raise any concerns they may have about their time in or outside school, and gain support when required. It is also a time when form tutors will pass on any messages to pupils, planners are checked, and when year group assemblies take place.

The Transition to Secondary School
Year 7 is an important time, as pupils make the transition from primary to secondary school. During their first year, pupils will have the opportunity to partake in a range of activities to help them settle into their new school. At Hurstmere we have seven core values that all students should expect to develop during their time with us, these are: respect, teamwork, resilience, ambition, integrity, leadership, and self-belief (Hurstmere RTRAILS).
Moving to a new school can create feelings of anxiety and it is important for pupils to ensure they speak to staff when issues arise. Our pastoral team are here to support your son through his journey at Hurstmere and provide him with the tools he needs to reach his full potential.
As parents, we encourage you to take an active role in your son’s education, assisting with homework, ensuring deadlines are met, developing organisational skills, and supporting the school. Maintaining a positive home/school relationship is a way to foster trust and develop the understanding that we all have the student at the centre of our decisions. Having a growth mindset is the key to success.
Support
We offer a range of support which includes: Early Intervention Team’s Referral programme, Accelerated Reading, Peer Mentoring, SEMH support, Educational Psychologist, Student Welfare and Access Panel – SWAP.
We can also support pupils by recommending external agencies such as GPs, CAMHS and EHCP along with Bexley student support. Pupils in Year 7 may also be selected to take part in other supportive programmes run by a variety of staff at school.
We are eager to support our pupils and rely on open communication to ensure we can quickly deal with any issues that may arise. Please contact your son’s Form Tutor in the first instance if you have something you wish to discuss with us.

During their 20 minute registration boys can also liaise with their form tutors and inform them of any issues they may have in the corridors, between lessons and to or from school. As teachers we can work with your son to get the best out of them, we ask that you support us in what we are trying to achieve and take an interest in what they are studying by assisting them in completing homework and resolving conflicts that may occur during the school year.

Extra-curricular Activities
The school provides a wide range of activities outside of conventional classroom time and it is important that pupils make the most of the opportunities on offer. This helps pupils to settle in, make new friends and develop their social skills. Activities take place at lunchtime and after school, the timetable can be found on the 'Extra-curricular Activities' noticeboard outside the boys' toilets as well as on the school website.
It is recommended that all pupils take part in some form of extra-curricular activity to help them feel a part of their new school.
Achievement and Rewards
As a school we like to focus on the positive achievements of pupils in lessons, around the school, and any extra-curricular activities performed. Pupil achievements are recognised and rewarded by gaining house points which are allocated to them individually, and their house, throughout the year. We monitor the totals for the week and the Raising Standards Leader will issue certificates in assembly.
The cumulative scores are then used to support the reward system within the year group, with certificates (Bronze, Silver and Gold awards) being sent home. We will be displaying and recognising the efforts of each week’s “Top Ten” on the achievements notice board.
Each house point awarded is also added to the annual house competition which is concluded at the annual sports day event in the summer term. Pupils in Year 7 can also receive letters for their efforts. Rewards are run on a termly basis for the top 10 pupils throughout that period, and include rewards such as: pizza parties, laser tag, combat laser games, bowling and karting.
Microsoft Teams
All Year 7 pupils will be issued with their own login for our Microsoft 365 Platform. Each subject will have an area on Teams which they can use to communicate with pupils and set homework assignments. Pupils have access to Microsoft programmes through this platform.

This is put into a draw each day, with the Raising Standards Leader drawing 3 lucky golden tickets for a prize! Students in Year 8 can also receive letters home from teachers, their tutor, and their Raising Standards Leader for their efforts.
Rewards are run on a termly basis by the Rewards Coordinator for the top achieving pupils throughout that period, and include rewards such as: pizza parties, laser tag, combat laser games, bowling, karting, and much more. Bronze, silver, and gold achievement badges and certificates are also awarded to Year 8 students for demonstrating personal progress and outstanding achievement.
Homework
Your son will receive homework from his subject teachers. To support the boys, teachers will place details of homework onto a website called teams. To make the most of his studies at home a revision timetable should be created. There should be a good balance between academic studies and free time.
Microsoft Teams
All Year 8 students will be issued with their own login for our Microsoft 365 Platform. Each subject will have an area on Teams which they can use to communicate with pupils and set homework assignments.

Pupils who perform consistently throughout each term will be invited to take part in reward trips. Pupils can also receive points towards the annual House competition. Be sure to look out for opportunities throughout the year to contribute to the success of your House.
My advice would be to download the Arbor parent app so you can keep up to date with your son’s daily achievements.

GCSE OPTIONS
Year 9 pupils will be selecting their GCSE Options, which is a decision that the pupils need to make with maturity and reasoning. Prior to pupils selecting their options, they will be receiving a wide range of information that will assist them in making informed decisions about their future at Hurstmere school.
This is an opportunity for pupils to take more ownership and responsibility as the decisions they will make will have a direct impact on them.

Be sure to look out for opportunities throughout the year to contribute to the success of your House by showing the RTRAILS in your lessons. Pupils in Year 10 can also receive Golden tickets from teachers and form tutors for their efforts and they can be nominated for a Principal reward.
Homework
Your son will receive homework from his subject teachers. To support the pupils, teachers will place details of the homework onto Teams, identified as HWK.
As a parent, please download the Teams app and use your son’s login details to gain access and track what homework your son is to complete. This will enable you to support your son with their homework, organisation and meeting deadlines.
Some departments use other homework platforms, and these can be accessed by your son at home using their individual login details. Usually, the same details they use to log into the school computers. If you have any issues with specific platforms, please liaise with the classroom teacher for support.
Home and School Contact
As part of the home school contact, we have implemented the use of the ARBOR Parent app which will enable us to keep you up to date with the achievement points and behaviour points on a daily basis. This platform is also how you will be able to check your son's attendance and punctuality along with their tracking reports.
Please could I ask that you download the Arbor parents app if you do not have it, from either the Apple App store or the Google Play store, this is a free app. Please engage with this and prompt conversations with your son about his day in school.
Work Experience
All students will participate in 1 weeks work experience during the last week of the summer term.
All students must find their own work experience placement, the relevant paperwork needs to be completed and handed into Mrs Watson (school office). As we are not the only school in the local borough who complete work experience, places are limited and can be very competitive; we advise students to seek and confirm their placement as early as possible.

As year 11’s, revision in and outside of class is going to be important to ensure that your son achieves the best possible grades that he can. Each department will run revision sessions after school which your son should look to attend to improve his knowledge in the subject area.

Pupil achievements are recognised and rewarded in several ways in Year 11. To consistently reward students, we use Arbor to reward pupils with ‘House Points' for excellent effort and work. Each week pupils will receive a principal reward (accompanied by a letter home) as recognition of their hard work. Pupils can also receive points towards the annual House competition.
Be sure to look out for opportunities throughout the year to contribute to the success of your house.
Homework
Your son will receive homework from his subject teachers, this will also be posted on TEAMS. To support the pupils. To make the most of his studies at home, a revision timetable should be created.
